The Five Fold Study Guide

The prophet Agabus appears twice in the book of Acts. His first appearance is in Acts 11:27 and 28, which says, “And in these days came prophets from Antioch. And there stood up one of them named Agabus, and signified by the Spirit that there should be a dearth throughout all the world: which came to pass during the days of Claudius Caesar.”

Notice the word “signified.” It is the Greek word semaino, which means to signify, to give a sign, or to give an alert. It describes a foretelling of a coming event, and in this case, it was an advance notice that “a dearth [or famine] throughout all the world” was coming. This message Agabus gave was “by the Spirit.” The word “by” is the Greek word dia, which means through or through the instrumentality of. Here, Agabus was enlightened and empowered to speak through the instrumentality of the Holy Spirit. Had he not been before the Lord in His presence, he would have had nothing to speak on the Lord’s behalf.

In Acts 21:10 and 11, the prophet Agabus shows up a second time. The Bible says, “And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul’s girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles.”

Once again, we see the New Testament prophet Agabus moving in a predictive ability. Under the influence and moving of the Holy Spirit, he prophetically foretold what was about to happen to the apostle Paul when he arrived in Jerusalem. He would be bound and arrested and handed over to the Romans — all of which did come to pass as predicted. This is a clear example of a prophet’s ability to speak in advance of things to come.
