Andrew’s Testimony: God Does Not Use Sickness to Punish

Andrew Wommack once shared a testimony about a lesson he learned concerning sickness and God’s character.

One day, Andrew and his wife were talking with a mentor who was visiting their home. During their conversation about sickness, the mentor made the statement that God sometimes makes people sick. Andrew respectfully corrected her and explained that God does not bring sickness on people as punishment. He said that way of thinking belonged to the Old Testament mindset and did not reflect the truth of the gospel.

The discussion turned into an argument, and the mentor eventually left. Andrew’s wife—and his mother, who was also there—were upset with him for disagreeing so strongly with someone they respected so much. But Andrew said he was not angry; he simply was not willing to compromise his conviction that God does not punish people with sickness.

That night, however, Andrew’s son suddenly became very sick.

When it happened, Andrew fell right back into the same old belief he had just argued against. He began to think that God was punishing him for the way he had treated the mentor, and that his son’s sickness was the consequence of his mistake.

The next day, a close friend of Andrew’s came over and confronted him about it. The friend strongly rebuked Andrew for believing that God would punish him by making his son sick. In fact, he even called Andrew a hypocrite for teaching that God doesn’t use sickness, yet believing it himself when trouble came.

After that intense conversation, the friend left. Within about five minutes, Andrew suddenly realized exactly where he had been wrong. He repented and rejected the idea that God had anything to do with his son’s sickness.

Before his friend even returned to apologize for calling him a hypocrite, Andrew’s son was completely healed.

The lesson Andrew learned—and often teaches—is simple:
God does not punish people with sickness.
